Introduction to Tapestry Weaving
- the simple way
Note: this course is currently being updated to videos with subtitles in all languages. It is perfect for anyone in the world (see note below for EU students). You only need some knitting yarn and I show you how to make your own simple wooden frame loom or you can use a metal loom. All is explained in the Welcome section which is available to preview.
Welcome to my foundation course. It's perfect for beginners or for those wanting to refresh their skills. There is a lot of information out there and I want to simplify it for you. You might have done previous courses and been overwhelmed by it all. I would like to help you.
We will start with the basics, broken down into bitesize steps, offered in my first course. My weaving terminology will stay nice and simple. The filming of this course is very cosy - with close ups of my small pocket loom. Please note this course does not explore colour blending (yet) but only uses one strand of yarn in your colour choice, to help master your skills before advancing. We will create a lovely piece of work, together, at the end of the course and I have attached lots more sample images to work from. There is plenty of content with 5 hours of filming.
PLEASE SEE BELOW IF FROM EU
What do I cover?
I cover a lot of essential information to get you started with your own artworks. I do it in a gentle way without any complicated terminology. We will look at:
tension
sett
angles - shallow and steep
filling in between shapes
squares/rectangles
curves
meet and separate
hatching
cartoons
and so much more
What follows?
If you like what you learn you can then decide if you want to join my Artful Threads course. It is now complete after 9 months of filming and there is a lot of content covering 35 hours of video.
In my Artful Threads course we delve deeper into shape making and practise more techniques in greater detail - there are so many that I suggest you click on my AT link to read more. I create drawings for you to work from and we take it step by step.
I would love you to join me on this exciting new journey.
What equipment will you need for this Beginner's course?
The important part is I work at a sett of 8 ends per inch (so that's 8 warp threads in one inch). If you have a Mirrix loom you would need an 8 dent comb.
I work at a width of 5" on my Mirrix Chloe 8". I use a bigger loom purely for filming purposes, so you can see what I am doing a bit easier. However, you can use any of the following looms:
- wooden frame loom (which I show you how to make very easily)
- Mirrix Saffron, 5" or 8" Chloe
- a Mirrix equivalent loom (available on Etsy etc)
UK - you can purchase a Mirrix loom here
US - you can purchase my Mirrix loom and materials here
Tapestry Needles
Warp*
DK/8 ply/Light Worsted yarn
(I supply links to suppliers in the UK in detail within the course)
* Warp needs to be suitable for working at 8 ends per inch. You will need to purchase warp that is 22 wraps per inch (or 8 wraps in a cm)
I recommend two warps in the UK:
Weavers Bazaar (you want the 18's. They are now available in 100 g balls or 500 g cones)
George Weil (you want the 12/9)
NOTE FOR EU STUDENTS:
I have just launched my brand new online school for EU students. Please click on my website link or Instagram bio to access.
Why do I need a separate school? Tax legislation is different in the EU and tax has to be included in my prices.
Sandy, in the US
My first testimonial. Thank you so much.

about Liz
I am a professional artist turned tapestry weaver. I started on this journey as I was no longer feeling passionate about painting. I have always loved sewing and design. When I tried tapestry it was a real 'wow' moment. I could now combine my skills. I really enjoy creating more realistic imagery with my yarns - using my drawing skills and colour blending with multiple strands of fine yarn.
I am based in Bbox Studios in the creative heart of Newcastle Upon Tyne.
My tapestry collection is currently being exhibited at the Biscuit Factory art gallery in Newcastle.
I also run 'in person' workshops from my studio.
